“Located in Melbourne CBD is United Backpackers – an award-winning hostel with a funky edge.”
Where are you now and where is your next travel destination?
I’ve lived in Melbourne for the last 10 years and will never live anywhere else. Come visit and you’ll see why we have won the ‘Most Livable City in the World’ four times! My next trip will be to Port Douglas in Tropical North Queensland where we have just opened our second backpackers.
What do you like most about your job?
I’m lucky enough to have worked in the backpacker industry around Australia for 15 years. Aside from being around young, fun and happy traveIlers all day every day, I love working with passionate people who all want to give visitors to Melbourne and United Backpackers an amazing experience.
What do you always pack in your carry-on luggage?
Important documents, Ipod, a book and food!
What is your most memorable trip?
As a music lover it was always a dream to go to the Coachella Music Festival in California so a couple of years ago I finally did it. We had a few nights in West Hollywood checking out all the iconic music venues and drove the Big Sur to San Francisco. Then flew to Las Vegas where we partied with the best of them before driving through desert to Coachella. An amazing three weeks and I must say I love America!
What must-have travel products, accessories or apps do you recommend for any traveller?
I’ve been working in hostels since before Hotmail even existed and my advice here is sure, stay connected but don’t sit around on your devices for hours a day while you could be out actually experiencing! If the free Wi-Fi goes down you’d think the end of the world was coming!
Your favourite travel quote is…
If you could be someone else for one day who would that be?
I have absolutely no idea! It might be nice to get into Richard Branson’s head for a day.
Your greatest weakness is…
Working too much and not travelling enough.
If you could travel through time – where and what year/era would you chose to visit?
The 60’s, the music was awesome! Imagine seeing Hendrix, The Doors and The Beatles or going to Woodstock. Peace, love and crazy times! Or back to Seattle when grunge broke to see my ultimate all-time favorite band Nirvana.
As a travel expert, what are your travel hacks/tips for our readers?
