Located only 12 minutes from Sydney’s CBD is Taronga Zoo, one of the top day trip attractions to experience in the city. Unlike any other zoo I’ve visited, it boasts amazing sky-high views of Sydney’s Harbour, Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Easily a prime spot for New Year’s Eve in Sydney celebrations!
What is cool about Taronga Zoo is when you arrive. Firstly be sure to travel there via ferry, as it’s the most scenic option. Upon docking at the zoo’s ferry terminal you are transported up to the main entrance via cable car.
Inside the zoo there are animals from all over the world – giraffes, chimpanzees, elephants, seals, tigers, meerkats, hippos, birds, alligators, reptiles and many more. One of my favourite areas of the park is the gorilla enclosure – the silverback gorilla is simply incredible and majestic.
Also there are a number of free feeding demonstrations, shows and educational talks by the keepers. The bird show is a highlight as the city views from the amphitheatre is stunning.
How to get there: Take a ferry from Circular Quay or Darling Harbour. The Manly Fast Ferry has a deal combining all-day return travel and zoo entrance tickets. Alternatively, you can catch the 247 bus from Wynyard bus station.
